Energy Assistance Programs
Suffield Community Aid is the local application site for Suffield residents, both home owners and renters, to apply for the CT Energy Assistance Program or the Operation Fuel Program. Each program has designated application periods and eligibility guidelines. Social workers are available to answer questions, complete applications and provide advocacy. Both programs provide assistance with residents’ primary home heating costs (oil, natural gas, propane, electricity, wood, or kerosene).
The CT Energy Assistance Program, (CEAP) generally runs from November 1st through April 30th of each year, depending on funding. The Connecticut Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) – helps households pay for primary heating bills. If the household’s primary heating costs are included in your rent, you may also apply for assistance. Suffield residents have the option of applying for the State’s energy program locally at the Suffield Community Aid. Appointments are needed – call (860) 668-1986. Operation Fuel: Operation Fuel is a private non-profit organization that partners with local fuel banks to provide fuel assistance in times of crisis or financial hardship. Grant amounts vary depending upon season and availability of funds, and are generally limited to one grant within a twelve month period of time. Other restrictions may also apply.
Suffield Community Aid Private Fuel Bank: The purpose of the SCA Private Fuel Bank is to provide fuel (oil, gas, electric, propane and wood) assistance to individuals and families in need. Priority is given to residents who do not qualify for other energy programs and whose health and safety is jeopardized by their inability to heat their home. The intent of these funds is to assist during crisis. Payments are made directly to the fuel vendors.
Utility Arrearage Forgiveness Programs: Most of Connecticut’s gas and electric utility companies offer assistance programs that can help customers reduce their utility back bills. (There are eligibility requirements in order to qualify.) For more information, contact your utility company.
Winter Protection Program (Utility Shutoff Moratorium): Most of Connecticut’s gas and electric utility companies participate in the Winter Protection Program. Participants in this program will be coded by their utility companies as “hardship cases” and will not have their utility service shut off between November 1st and May 1st of each year.
