About Suffield Community Aid
Suffield Community Aid (SCA), formerly the Emergency Aid Association, is a unique private, non-profit 501 (c) 3 social service agency that has served the residents of Suffield in times of need for 115 years. The story of the Emergency Aid Association began in 1903. At the suggestion of Dr. Philo W. Street, a group of Suffield women convened to discuss how to secure medical equipment for patients who could not afford the cost. From this need the Emergency Aid Association was born. Over time, the health needs of the community prompted the hiring of a full-time nurse. In these early years, the nurse traveled throughout the 43 square miles of the Town on a bicycle!
In 1998, the EAA affiliated its home care nursing care with St. Francis, but retained its role of being an integral provider of social services for Suffield residents. Today, 115 years later, we are still responding to the changing needs of our residents by offering critical social service and enriched programming.
The recent name change reflects our commitment to better connect our name to the services we provide. We felt that it was important to have “Suffield” in our name and “emergency” was confusing to many. We felt that “Suffield Community Aid, your local safety net” was the perfect fit!
As we set our sights ahead, we are mindful of our mission: to provide supportive health and social needs that positively affect the well-being of Suffield residents. We also honor those persons who, over a hundred years ago, acted on a vision that shaped and strengthened a community where all residents could grow and thrive.
